Burleigh M. Hutchins Jr, 74

    Burleigh Maurice Hutchins, Jr., 74, of Uxbridge, MA, died peacefully on November 15, 2013 at Lydia Taft House, with loved ones by his side.
    Born on January 11, 1939 in Crossett, AK, he was the son of Burleigh M. and Lois (Wilcoxson) Hutchins Sr.
    Husband of Lorraine M. (Marino) Hutchins, he received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maine in 1961.
    His career started as a Manufacturing Engineer for Westinghouse Electric Corporation and later for the Foxboro Company.  It was at the Foxboro Company that his interest in analytical systems and instrumentation was initiated.  He then served as Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Waters Associates, where he led the development of the first commercially successful HPLC systems, along with the development efforts of many related product extensions and subsequent technology generations. Much of that core technology is still in use today throughout the chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Burleigh went on to co-found and serve as Chief Technology Officer at Zymark Corporation, where he led the R&D efforts that resulted in the development of a wide range of laboratory automation products including many that are used throughout the pharmaceutical drug discovery and drug development industries.  Burleigh assisted with the startup of several new companies.  At one of them, SMSI, he finished the development of the electro-mechanical hardware and software which became approved medical devices.  Most recently, he served as Chief Technology Officer at MicroCal and was co-founder of AVIA Biosystems. He was a life-long aviation and boating enthusiast who enjoyed exploring the small airports and the waterways of New England.
    In addition to his wife of 10 years, he is survived by his two children, Burleigh M. Hutchins III of Upton MA, and Rebecca L. Hutchins of Bellingham, WA, his brother Dexter Hutchins of NJ, his sister Julia Hutchins of  PA, and his step children, Cheryl-Lee Barthelmes and her husband Michael, of Syracuse, NY, Robin Gonya and her husband Michael, of Uxbridge MA, John Cafarella and his wife Allison, of AZ and Kim Marinelli of RI.
     A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the Consigli-Ruggerio Funeral Home, 46 Water Street, Milford, at 12 Noon.
     Visiting hours will be held from 9 - 11:30AM, prior to the Service. Burial will take place at a later date, convenient to the family.

I met Burligh many years ago when he convinced me to come work for him at a little company called Waters in Milford Ma. Burliegh was one of a kind. I have many great memorys,but what stands out the most is how much he loved solving problems,teaching others.and pushing the limits of technology. He also had tremendous faith in the people around him. He made us all better. He has left a tremendous legacy of accomplishments in Scientific Instrumentation and has touched the lives of so many people in so many positive ways. Rest in Peace Friend

To the Hutchins Family - My sincere condolences. Burleigh was a mentor, a colleague, and most importantly, a real friend. We met as I joined MicroCal in 2008. He taught me much as I was new to the company and new to the real details of the technology. Burleigh mentored me and was always there to help, as he did for everyone who sought his advice or assistance. Even-tempered, wise, and a technological genius, he was still an interesting and amusing colleague. We often walked together at lunch time, and he shared many stories of his past experiences - they were ALL interesting and I was happy to have him share details such as building and flying a "kit" helicopter - or lobster fishing in Maine. Burleigh will be sincerely missed - the world needs more of the people like him: patient, caring,sharing teachers who are also 'doers'.

I had the pleasure to have worked with Burleigh on a couple of interesting projects while he was at MicroCal and my own shop. For a Toolmaker like myself it was a rare chance to work with such a talented gentleman and I will miss him. Not only was he talented but he was fun to be around. I hope it is some comfort to the family to know he was so highly respected and loved.

God Bless Burleigh as my loving thoughts are for him and move to his entire family. I worked for him at Zymark and he taught me all about laboratory automation and how to add benefit to scientific research. He touched so many of our lives with knowledge and advice and his legacy and will live on forever. I have enrolled Burleigh for remebrance in daily Masses, Prayers and Rosaries with the Association of Marian Helpers.

As a young engineer at Waters in the late 70s I admired Burleigh above all other managers. Although I did not work for him, he taught me many valuable lessons, which remain alive with me and will continue to guide me until my end. Hopefully these will continue to live with others to whom I can teach them. I have received the news of Burleigh's death with great sadness, but feeling very fortunate to have been touched by him.
